Overview
Converging transdisciplinary research and partnerships to advance the research needed for responsible and equitable marine carbon dioxide removal.
Purpose
CONVERGE mCDR is an interdisciplinary program co-led by academic and Indigenous researchers to advance the research needed for responsible and equitable marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) in Canada. CONVERGE mCDR aims to support key research that is aligned with community priorities through collaboration across science, policy, engagement, and economics.
CONVERGE mCDR:
- Builds the foundations of rigorous and responsible science to inform policy and socioeconomic decisions, which in turn shape how such science is conducted
- Creates co-designed research agendas and outputs through Indigenous-led community engagement
- Fosters collaboration among:
- Aligns with Transforming Climate Action goals ensuring:
Research topics
Science
Investigate environmental and ecological impacts to evaluate scientific, community, regulatory, and economic risks and co-benefits and identify key knowledge gaps to help direct future research efforts
Engagement
Conduct engagement co-led by Indigenous representatives to increase knowledge exchange and provide opportunities for co-design, co-ownership, and collaborations
Policy
Evaluate effective governance pathways that support participatory processes for transparent and accountable mCDR research
Economics
Explore carbon market pathways and community-driven benefits-sharing models, driven by Free Prior and Informed Consent
Focus and outputs
With a focus on co-design, collaboration, and integration, and with input from advisory organizations, CONVERGE mCDR delivers research outputs to help ensure any advancements in mCDR are scientifically robust, socially equitable, and financially sustainable.
Interdisciplinary teams, led by a cohort of CONVERGE Highly Qualified Personnel (HQPs) and guided by principal investigators and the four TCA Transformation Accelerators, will coordinate across the primary pillars of science, policy, community engagement, and economics to investigate marine carbon dioxide removal within Canada.
Coordinating organizations
The coordinating organizations help inform the CONVERGE mCDR research agenda, ensuring work and outcomes are focused to meet key needs, while also providing access to valuable expertise and networks.
