In Canada, marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) is developing at a rapid pace as a method to mitigate climate change and help achieve net zero goals. Research and pilot-scale demonstrations are moving forward within existing regulatory frameworks, which also enable access to carbon offset markets. Regulators, policymakers, community organizations, rights holders, and funders are actively involved in scaling up their understanding and participation in mCDR to help inform their views of building a safe, responsible and equitable sector that will bring benefits to Canadian communities, environment, and economy, and be internationally competitive.
The mCDR in Canada Forum, led by the Ocean Frontier Institute, in partnership with supporting and coordinating organizations, will be a two-day state-of-the-sector event in Halifax. The Forum will bring together researchers, industry, government, community organizations, rights holders, and funders to share updates on activities and discuss insights and opportunities related to mCDR in Canada. Through presentations and dialogue, actions, priorities and partnerships can be identified that will allow organizations to make more informed decisions to advance this important carbon removal approach.
We’re now accepting poster submissions for the forum. Submit by November 10, 2025.

In anticipation of the upcoming mCDR in Canada Forum, join Ocean Visions for a virtual webinar designed to get you up to speed on marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) — what it is, why it matters, and where the field stands today.
The session will provide an mCDR 101 primer and an overview of the latest developments and opportunities across Canada and globally, helping participants prepare for deeper engagement at the Forum.

As part of the mCDR in Canada Forum, COMPASS will host a four-hour science communication workshop for TCA-affiliated researchers on December 1. Grounded in the latest science communication research, the workshop will help participants identify the relevance of their work for key audiences they aim to reach—including government, industry, community members, funders, journalists and fellow scientists. Please note this event is limited to 25 participants. Register today to secure your spot!

Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR), when paired with extensive emissions reductions, is a mitigation strategy to limit warming to 1.5°C as it removes legacy carbon emissions from the atmosphere by augmenting natural processes on ocean and land.
However, in order to meet climate goals, CDR must scale 30 times its present capacity by 2030, which is estimated to require an annual global investment of 1.13 billion USD/year for research and development.
