Eligibility

The training program fully supports 10 early career scholars who have at least a bachelor's degree in science. Scholars are required to commit full-time to the Centre of Excellence program; it will not be possible to continue work on a degree or employment during the program.

Applications will be evaluated on core criteria, including:

  • Minimum educational background (or equivalent experience)
  • Relevance of the training program to ongoing or planned ocean observations in their home country
  • Motivation for participating in the program
  • Commitment to building capacity in ocean observation in their home country
  • Past or planned commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility practices
  • Interest in trans- and/or multidisciplinary work would be considered an asset
  • Minimum English language requirement

Applicants pursuing a degree that will not be completed at the program start or who are currently employed and returning to that position after the program are required to submit a letter of support from their current supervisor, outlining their understanding and permission for the student or employee to take a leave from their current position for the program. This letter must be submitted in their application and will be verified with the supervisor if an interview takes place.

Priority consideration will be given to early career candidates from developing and emerging nations who hold positions at research, academic, or governmental institutes in their home country, and who anticipate returning there after completion of the program. Applications from representatives of traditional or Indigenous communities are strongly encouraged.

The selection process will consider gender and regional balance to ensure inclusivity and diversity.

Successful applicants will require a valid passport and Canadian Study Permit. Information will be provided to the successful scholars.

Eligible expenses

Scholars are supported financially with accommodations, a monthly stipend, and program travel costs paid for the duration of their program.*

* Subject to confirmation of funding.
