Overview

The Opportunities Fund enables short-term, collaborative research projects focused on the ocean-climate-people nexus. Supported by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund through the Transforming Climate Action (TCA) program, it offers flexible funding for rapid and impactful responses to emerging climate research priorities and time-sensitive, transnational opportunities that may not be supported through traditional channels.

The Opportunities Fund supports various aspects of research, including securing research equipment and supplies, obtaining essential services, managing incidental expenses, paying research personnel, covering travel and field costs, and supporting Indigenous engagement and other perspectives within TCA projects.

Eligiblility

The Opportunities Fund is open to current faculty and research staff at Dalhousie University, Université du Québec à Rimouski, Université Laval, and Memorial University of Newfoundland, including early career researchers, mid and late-career researchers, and postdoctoral fellows. Applicants must be actively involved with the TCA program.

Active involvement includes:

  • Principal investigator or postdoctoral researcher working on a TCA Large Research Project
  • Academic supervisor or faculty member collaborating on a TCA Large Research Project

Projects under the Opportunities Fund must seamlessly align with the TCA scientific strategy and the vision of Large Research Projects. This alignment ensures that each initiative contributes coherently to the overarching mission of advancing climate action and ocean research.

Funding and duration

  • Awards should fall within the range of $30,000-$75,000
  • Funding is intended for projects to be undertaken and completed within a 24-month time frame
  • Projects may be extended with prior approval from the awarding institution’s TCA Scientific Director

Selection criteria

The Selection Committee will use the following criteria to assess applications:

  • Excellence and creativity of the proposed research
  • Excellence of the proponent(s)
  • Project aligns with and adds value to TCA research priorities in innovative and creative ways
  • Project responds to emerging or immediate opportunities for external funding
  • Project leverages significant resources from external (national or international) research projects, including current TCA partners
  • Project has potential for improved linkages across groups of researchers within the TCA program, across TCA partner organizations, and/or engagement with international and/or industry partners
  • Project supports the development of HQP or research capacity, and/or establishes linkages among existing TCA projects and across TCA partner organizations
  • Project demonstrates commitment to respectful engagement with underrepresented groups in the application and implementation of the proposed research

Eligible expenses

  • Funds must be administered in accordance with the CFREF Administration Guide. Specifically, as per those guidelines, awarded funds must not be used to pay an awardee researcher’s salary or other remuneration.
  • TCA policies and guidelines must also be adhered to. TCA does not accept responsibility or obligation for funds expended in excess of the amount provided through the Opportunities Fund, or for funds expended before or after the term of the Opportunities Fund.

Funds can be used for:

  • Purchasing equipment, materials and supplies
  • Supporting field work, including travel and accommodation

Funds can be used for salaries of highly qualified personnel (HQP) including:

  • Students
  • Post-doctoral fellows
  • Field technician, etc.
