The Opportunities Fund enables short-term, collaborative research projects focused on the ocean-climate-people nexus. Supported by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund through the Transforming Climate Action (TCA) program, it will allow researchers to respond rapidly to time sensitive opportunities (usually leveraging a substantial amount of external funding) and collaborate with external partners and collaborators from government, industry, and other institutions. It aims to enable opportunities that are unlikely to be supported through funding mechanisms, such as through TCA large research projects and other TCA funding programs.
The Opportunities Fund supports various aspects of research, including securing research equipment and supplies, obtaining essential services, managing incidental expenses, paying research personnel, covering travel and field costs, and supporting Indigenous engagement and other perspectives within TCA projects. There is an expectation that TCA funds will be leveraged from external partnerships.
The Opportunities Fund is open to current faculty and research staff at Dalhousie University, Université du Québec à Rimouski, Université Laval, and Memorial University of Newfoundland, including early career researchers, mid and late-career researchers, and postdoctoral fellows. Applicants must be actively involved with the TCA program.
Active involvement includes:
Projects under the Opportunities Fund must seamlessly align with the TCA scientific strategy and the vision of Large Research Projects. This alignment ensures that each initiative contributes coherently to the overarching mission of advancing climate action and ocean research.
The Selection Committee will use the following criteria to assess applications:
Funds can be used for:
Funds can be used for salaries of highly qualified personnel (HQP) including:
Prospective applicants are highly encouraged to connect with their institute’s TCA Scientific Directorate to discuss the project prior to applying. The following information must be compiled and sent as one PDF document to your institution’s TCA scientific director:
Transforming Climate Action (TCA) partner institutions are committed to fostering a research and collegial culture grounded in respectful engagement and balanced representation. We encourage applications from Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, racialized individuals, Black individuals, women, and members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, including trans and non-binary individuals.
This call for submissions will remain open until all funds have been allocated, allowing researchers to take advantage of unique, time sensitive opportunities as they arise.
Opportunities Fund proposals will be submitted to the applicant’s institutional TCA scientific director for a nimble internal review process and recommendation to the TCA Scientific Directorate. Proposals will be reviewed and approved directly by the Scientific Directorate in order to promote prompt and timely responses.
