Ronnie Noonan-Birch is a marine socioecologist whose work explores the intersection of people, policy, and the ocean, with a focus on how human well-being is intrinsically linked to ocean health.
She holds a BSc in Marine Biology and a Master’s in Environmental Studies, where her graduate research on Canada’s blue economy developed a framework to assess social equity, environmental sustainability, and economic viability in ocean industries through the lens of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Ronnie has been part of the Ocean Frontier Institute since 2021, gaining experience in translating ocean science into policy solutions for climate challenges. During that time, she has built international partnerships and supported globally significant ocean-climate initiatives.
In 2025, Ronnie assumed leadership of OFI’s Transforming Climate Action Policy Hub, where she works with over 180 ocean researchers to bridge cutting-edge science with actionable policy solutions. She actively works to build capacity within the ocean community, supporting interdisciplinary approaches and empowering the next generation of ocean leaders.
Ronnie regularly speaks at national and international conferences, including the UN Ocean Decade Conference and the UN Ocean Conference, sharing insights on ocean-climate linkages and the role of interdisciplinary collaboration in shaping policy. Ronnie brings strategic insight to the ocean-climate dialogue, helping align scientific innovation with policy frameworks that support a sustainable future.
